RECAP
New York Times wrote about " Qatar Got the World Cup It Wanted "
In the end, after a tournament shadowed by controversy since the host rights were awarded, Qatar had the turn in the global spotlight it sought.
When the tiny desert state, a thumb-shaped peninsula, launched what seemed like an unlikely quest to host the men's football World Cup, the most popular sporting event on the planet, it sought nothing more than to be better known, to be a player on the world stage. The tournament has cost more than anyone could have dreamed – in money, time, and lives.
The extraordinary finale — a fantasy final between Argentina and France; a first World Cup victory for Messi, the world's best player; a frantic encounter decided by six goals and a penalty shootout — ensured it. And, as if to ensure the nation's final imprint on the first World Cup in the Middle East, Qatar's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, stopped a beaming Messi on his way to collect the sport's biggest trophy and pulled him back. There was one more task that needed to be completed.

ONCE AGAIN 💪💪💪
Qatar is going to host another World Cup. Hoops, this time FIBA Basketball World Cup.
LOS ANGELES —FIBA, the international governing body for basketball, announced that Doha, Qatar would host the 2027 men’s Basketball World Cup.
In addition, FIBA announced that the 2026 Women's Basketball World Cup will be held in Berlin, Germany. Team USA won the 2022 Women's World Cup in Australia. Spain is the reigning World Cup champion in men's football.
The announcements were made in Manila, Philippines, one day before the highly anticipated draw for the fiba world cup 2023, which is expected to take place this summer in Southeast Asia.
Team USA, which will play all of its fiba world cup 2023 games in the Philippines, will very certainly be drawn into a group with Greece, Italy, Germany, Iran, Finland, New Zealand, Jordan, and Angola.
The fiba world cup 2023 will also be held in Okinawa, Japan, and Jakarta, Indonesia. The knockout stages will be placed in the Philippines.
In naming Doha as the host city for the '27 Cup, basketball FIBA authorities emphasized the benefits of having the complete tournament in one city. This year's men's cup is being held in three countries, with the 2019 Cup in China taking place in cities across the vast country. Over the course of 20 days, Team USA played in four Chinese cities.
While FIBA and the NBA are completely separate organizations, Qatar's Basketball World Cup hosting is yet another entry point for the country and region into major basketball competitions.
The UAE has held NBA preseason games and will host Team USA for two exhibition matches prior to the FIBA World Cup. In addition, the governments of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have indicated interest in purchasing an NBA team.
Human rights controversies
The build-up to the FIFA World Cup was overshadowed by allegations of major human rights violations, including the criminalization of homosexuality in Qatar, the rampant death of migrant labourers, and the country's limited rights for women.
Competing countries, like Australia, have spoken out against Qatar's human rights record. Qatar and its supporters retaliated, with foreign minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani labelling western media criticism "arrogant" and "racist."
FIFA wrote a letter to each team prior to the tournament stressing that the sport should not be held accountable for global issues and that the focus should be solely on football.
